Event Description:

Antrim Conservation District to Host Soil Health and Science Learning Opportunities in Antrim County

BELLAIRE — Growers of all kinds will benefit from engaging and interesting soil science events at the Antrim Conservation District on June 6th and 7th.  These opportunities to learn are for anyone who loves gardening or farming on a small or large scale.  There is no charge for attending and take-home countertop kitchen scrap collectors and compost bins will be available for purchase.   Join the ACD team on Friday, June 6, and Saturday, June 7, at 4820 Stover Road in Bellaire to learn and have fun at these important presentations:

  • The Exciting World of Biochar, with Koffi Kpachavi and Tim Overdier, will be held on Friday, June 6, from 12 to 2 pm. This demonstration will show how biochar is made and why it's such a fantastic and important soil amendment for everything from a potted plant to a field of corn.

  • Composting at Home, a workshop presented by ACD education coordinator, Robyn Gransow, will teach people how to begin composting at home with ease.  It will run from 2 to 3pm, a demonstration of composting containers is included.

  • Soil Health and MAEAP, with Lauren Shaffner, will run from 3 to 4pm.  Learn about this important program for farmers as Lauren shares information about the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program.

  • Microbiome Science and our Soil Systems, with soil expert Dane Terrill will run on Saturday, June 7, from 9am to 3pm. Throughout the day, Dane will lay the foundation for soil health (minerals, microbes, cover crops & carbon), plant health (fertility and monitoring), and the value of integrating regenerative practices into all crop production.

  • ACD Kids Tomato Club: Grab Your Plant and Buckets! We'll take a lunch break at 12:00pm. on June 7 and give a tomato plant and bucket to K-5th grade kids.  For all the kids who already have their plant and bucket, be sure to come to the event and get your funky fun animal gardening gloves while supplies last.
