The Man Who Laughs is a 1928 American silent film directed by the German Expressionist filmmaker Paul Leni. The film is an adaptation of Victor Hugo’s 1869 novel of the same name, and it stars Mary Philbin as the blind Dea and Conrad Veidt as Gwynplaine. The film is known for the grotesque grin on the character Gwynplaine’s face, which often leads it to be classified as a horror film. Film critic Roger Ebert stated “The Man Who Laughs is a melodrama, at times even a swashbuckler.

The film will be accompanied by Andrew Rogers on our ‘Mighty’ Wurlitzer theater organ presenting his original score. Rogers, a Detroit native, is head organist at the Michigan Theatre in Ann Arbor. In addition to scoring and performing silent films he, also, lectures on film scoring and performs concerts throughout the U.S. and Internationally.

Tickets are $25.00 online at MyNorth Tickets, musichouse.org or $30.00 at the door. Please visit musichouse.org or call 231-938-9300 for more information.
